If we’re going to use snow, or ice, in magic, it’s important to consider some of the symbolism and associations of these items. After all, if everything in nature has its own correspondences, then first we have to think about what snow is associated with, right? First of all, snow is water. It’s cold and it’s frozen, but it’s water nonetheless. Water is a feminine energy and highly connected with the aspects of the Goddess. Used for healing, cleansing, and purification, Water is related to the West, and associated with passion and emotion. You can gather snow and use it for different purposes–for instance, wet, sticky snow gathered during a raging blizzard might be used in workings related to high energy and power. A jar full of light fluffy snow collected during a soft, quiet snowfall could be incorporated into a ritual for peacefulness and tranquility.
However, I don’t really know where my obsession with snow started. I’ve always loved the heat more than the cold, but there was certainly a point in my life, when cold and snow were really a bliss. Maybe it’s because of the distinct snow memories that I have. Snow days were happy days for me. On snow days I got to be with my friends, and we got to do my favorite ever activity: sledging. It was quite a rural game, I didn’t have a sledge so my best friend Elena and me were just using a huge piece of a cardboard box, to slide happily down the hill. It was really magical.
Go for a walk in the woods on a day that it’s snowing. Enjoy the silence, and the magic of the snowfall–some people report that they have experienced messages from the Divine as they walk on a snowy day. Perhaps it’s because we’re better able to hear the gods when it’s quiet! There’s nothing like waking up on a Sunday morning to find a bed of freshly fallen, pure white snow on your lawn. Of course, the best way to start a day like that is with a cup of hot chocolate and plenty of fun winter activities like sledding and making snow angels. Snow, without a doubt, is one of nature’s most beautiful gifts.
Snow makes everything clean and quiets the world down. I love the sound of it. It’s so peaceful. Just like unicorns and rainbows it just is. Playing in, riding on, and throwing snow at each other helps us remember (and rekindle) that magic but with the added appreciation of adulthood. Take some dead trees, a bunch of gross mud, even a broken down car and add a few inches of fresh white snow… instant postcard! Add fresh snow to an already stunning mountain landscape or an endless panorama of white peaks and sparkling glaciers, and it might just take your breath away. Even if you aren’t into that sort of thing, I challenge you to stare up at falling snow for five minutes and see if your mind doesn’t relax and zone out.
